Missmatch chair
MissMatch is a design sculpture that explores the relationship between material and form. The works juxtapose organic and geometric shapes produced through industrial processes, and through the intervention of craftsmanship, bring them into a new balance within a single structure. Form and texture interact, resulting in a state that is both contrasting and unified.
As a series, each piece begins with the inherent condition of its material. Natural urushi lacquer may fully cover and seal wood that has been unselected or discarded by industry, stabilizing its irregularities; or it may recede in parts, allowing the wood to remain visible in its natural state, forming a contrast with the lacquered surface.
The making process unfolds between control and adaptation, responding to the material’s differences and contingencies. Within this interplay, each MISSMATCH chair acquires its own distinct individuality.
